Update on Flooding in Pakistan |
“The misery of Pakistan's flooding, which has already displaced millions, is showing up in the form of communicable illnesses, the United Nations said Monday.”
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) there are over 204,000 confirmed cases of diarrhea and many other skin diseases pushing the threat of an epidemic outbreak to new heights. "Strong water and sanitation interventions, such as providing clean drinking water supply and addressing environmental hazards, are urgently needed to prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases” the WHO said Sunday.
Three weeks into this disaster has left over 1500 people dead and over 20 million displaced seeking shelter and food. As the suffering continues many health officials fear the death toll will rise as people cut off from aid stations are forced to wade through disease infected flood waters to get to these relief centers. As days grow into weeks initial fear gives way to desperation and feelings of hopelessness. Millions who have lost homes, businesses, farms and livelihood now face the growing threats posed by the lack of clean drinking water and life threatening diseases lurking in the yet to subside flood waters.
